On August 2, Beijing time, the 2023 Fortune Global 500 list was announced. Guangzhou Municipal Construction Group Co., Ltd. (GMC) has been included in the list for three consecutive years, ranking 380th this year with an operating revenue of RMB 264.078 billion. This achievement signifies the company’s consistent advancement toward its objective of becoming a world-class, globally competitive urban construction operator.

GMC, with a 73-year history, is a prominent state-owned enterprise under the direct supervision of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of Guangzhou Municipal Government. It holds the distinction of being the first enterprise group in southern China to possess the special-grade qualification for general contracting of housing construction projects, Grade A design qualification for the construction industry, special-grade qualification for general contracting of municipal public engineering projects, and Grade A design qualification for the municipal engineering industry simultaneously. As the leading force in Guangzhou’s urban construction, GMC has successfully undertaken numerous landmark projects including Canton Tower, Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, Baiyun International Convention Center, Pazhou International Convention and Exhibition Center , CITIC Plaza, Guangzhou International Financial Center (Guangzhou West Tower), Guangzhou Opera House, Haixinsha Square, Guangzhou International Financial City, Guangzhou International Campus of South China University of Technology, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), Renmin Bridge, Guangzhou Bridge, Haizhu Bridge, and Xinguang Expressway. The company has been honored with 41 Luban Prizes, 32 Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prizes, 47 National Municipal Gold Cup Demonstration Project Awards, 61 National Quality Engineering Awards, and 61 Science and Technology Awards from the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture.

In the new era, under the leadership of the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee and the People’s Government of Guangzhou Municipality, and with the care and support of all sectors of society, GMC has successfully striven for a remarkable development that has impressed the industry. Over the past five years, GMC has achieved annual increases of over 30% in operating revenue and 25% in total profit. It made its debut on the Fortune Global 500 list in 2021 and ranked 360th on the list in 2022.

Becoming a world-class leader entails overcoming challenges. The 2023 Fortune Global 500 list was compiled in 2022, when the pandemic was still raging. Faced with many challenges, GMC stands firm to exert full power to “ensure production” and steadily promote the construction of more than 2,000 ongoing projects, ensuring the quality and quantity of major projects such as the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) and the People’s Liberation Army’s into-city review platform. With full enthusiasm to “expand the market,” GMC has organized more than 50% of new tasks outside Guangzhou, and the “going global” strategy has achieved tangible results. GMC has made every effort to “strive for innovation” and has won 206 science and technology awards at all levels, including 183 at the provincial and ministerial levels, and 220 quality awards at all levels, including 19 at the national level. With full efforts to “fight against the epidemic”, GMC has successively completed the construction tasks of multiple emergency projects such as Haizhu Zhongdai Square Temporary Hospital, Qiming School Temporary Hospital, Baiyun District Emergency Isolation Transfer Point, and Baiyun District Jianggao Emergency Isolation Transfer Point. The “GMC Pioneer” volunteer service team has dispatched more than 30,000 person-times to support Guangzhou’s epidemic prevention and control work.

In 2022, GMC has taken on the important role of “pillar” and “cornerstone” with a strong sense of mission, making contributions to the dual victory of epidemic prevention and control and economic and social development. It has seen a total operating revenue of RMB 264.078 billion and a total profit of RMB 4.026 billion, thereby leading the way in China’s construction industry.

Looking back at the road behind, we see a road filled with the beauty of youth. Embarking on a new journey, we forge ahead and set off again. The year 2023 marks the starting year for fully implementing the spirit of the 20^th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the transition year for implementing the “14^th Five-Year Plan”, and the important year for the beginning of building a modern socialist country in all respects. GMC will adhere to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, deeply study and implement the spirit of the 20^th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the important speeches and instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping during his inspection of Guangdong, and conscientiously carry out the “1310” specific deployment of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and the “1312” strategies and measures of the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee. Besides, GMC will take past achievements and advantages as the starting point to align with higher positions and advance towards higher goals, and actively find the right direction and opponents in the trends of the times, global perspectives, national development plans, and the missions of the province and the city. By doing these, GMC will explore new paths while carrying forward the past, create new achievements through hard work and practical efforts, and open up new prospects by tackling difficulties, thereby continuing to write a new chapter of glory with a new starting point.
